Generally, no. A New York notary’s commission authorizes them to perform notarial acts within New York, and that authority does not automatically extend to other states. If a New York notary travels to another state, they may not lawfully act as a notary there unless they also hold a notary commission from that other state.
New York Notary Jurisdiction
New York law, like most state laws, ties a notary’s jurisdiction to the state that granted the commission. The notarial certificate’s venue will reflect New York counties when acts are performed in‑state.
Even if the document involves out‑of‑state property or parties, the notary’s authority is anchored to New York when they are physically present there.
Out-of-State Notarizations Used in New York
New York generally recognizes notarizations taken in other U.S. states if they were performed in accordance with the laws of those states.
