Brainerd is one of Chattanooga’s older east-side neighborhoods. Brainerd Road runs through the middle of it, from Missionary Ridge to South Chickamauga Creek. The name goes back to the Brainerd Mission, a school for Cherokee children founded in 1817. The city annexed the area east of Missionary Ridge in 1929, and neighborhoods of mid-century houses grew up here. Today many of those houses are being sold, refinanced or passed down to the next generation, and that brings paperwork that needs a notary.

How a deed gets from your table to the public record
Many people aren’t sure what happens after a deed is signed. Here is the general sequence in Hamilton County. Your attorney or title company may handle some of these steps for you.
- The deed is prepared. An attorney, a title company or you (with document-preparation help) prepares the deed with the correct legal description of the property.
- The grantor signs in front of the notary. The person transferring the property shows ID and acknowledges their signature. Karen completes the acknowledgment certificate and applies her seal.
- The deed is recorded. The original goes to the Hamilton County Register of Deeds, in the courthouse at 625 Georgia Avenue in downtown Chattanooga, to become part of the public record.

No. Brainerd is the older Chattanooga neighborhood along Brainerd Road, east of Missionary Ridge. East Brainerd is a separate, more suburban area further southeast. Karen serves both, and East Brainerd has its own page.
Does a deed have to be notarized to be recorded in Hamilton County?
In Tennessee, a deed is generally recorded only if the signer’s signature has been acknowledged before a notary (or proved by witnesses). The Register of Deeds office is in the Hamilton County Courthouse at 625 Georgia Avenue. An attorney or title company can make sure the deed itself is drafted correctly.
Can you prepare my deed for me?

Do both spouses need to be there for a refinance signing?
Usually every borrower, and sometimes a non-borrowing spouse, has to sign. Each person signing needs to appear in front of the notary with valid ID. Your lender’s instructions will list who has to sign.
